Our gastrointestinal system comprises of the gastrointestinal tract and accessory organs. Basically, GI tract is a long tube that extends from oral cavity where food enters via food pipe, esophagus and finally to anus where the undigested food gets discharged. Accessory organs include pancreas, liver and salivary glands. These secrete enzymes into the digestive tract.
The primary function of GI tract is to process the nutrients, energy from the food and fluids that you consume. To do this, GI system breaks them into smaller components to absorb the essential nutrients.
